Top 12 Myths About Hypnosis
There are many myths about hypnosis in popular culture that may cause fear and apprehension in a potential client.
These irrational fears may prevent the client from taking advantage of the benefits of hypnosis.
This is regrettable, as hypnosis is a recognized, safe and effective way to bring about positive changes in your life.
Most of these myths are derived from Hollywood movies where hypnotists are portrayed as having a “special power” that allows them to exert complete control over their subjects.
Needless to say this view of hypnotism is pure fiction and has little basis in reality.
Hypnosis is a safe, effective and scientifically accepted procedure that is being practiced all over the world
In the United States, the American Medical Association (AMA) formally recognized the benefits of hypnosis in 1958.
MYTH #1 – A hypnotist can control and force me to say or do things against my will.
This is very prevalent myth that is completely wrong.
In hypnosis it is actually the client who is always in control, not the hypnotist.
A person in the hypnotic state determines their own level of participation in the process.
Hypnosis can never be used to make you do something that you do not want to do.
Under hypnosis you will not be able to do anything which goes against your personal values or beliefs.
Hypnosis is not sleep.
It is in fact a state of heightened awareness in which you are aware of everything that’s happening around you.
If you are asked to do something unacceptable to your values, your mind will simply reject it and you will come out of hypnosis immediately.
Hypnosis is used to strengthen positive messages and weaken or neutralize negative messages that are already in your subconscious mind. This makes it possible to effect a permanent change in you when you are ready to make the change.
In fact, part of the first session at Ennar Hypnosis is used to determine if the client honestly WANTS the requested change. This determination is made before the client is ever put into hypnosis.
For example, suppose a client tells me,“My wife wants me to stop smoking. Can you help?”
The client's choice of words probably means that he is not yet personally committed to stop smoking.
In this case, hypnosis will not help this client to stop smoking.
In other words, hypnosis can be used to create change, but ...only when the client is genuinely ready for the change.
You may wonder how stage hypnotists are able to make people to do the most ridiculous things.
The truth is that every person chosen by the entertainer is a willing volunteer who agrees to take part in the entertainment, and is eager and willing to do these crazy things.
The stage hypnotist selects only those volunteers who are most eager to perform as they are sure to provide the best entertainment for the audience.
To summarize, the hypnotist has no power over you at all and cannot make you do anything against your will.
All the hypnotist does is guide you into a hypnotic state. The hypnotist is not a master, but only a guide, and you are always in control and aware of what is happening.
Simply put, it is you, not the hypnotist, who makes hypnosis work or not work.
MYTH #2 – You can be made to reveal personal secrets while under hypnosis
The hypnotist has no control over you at all, and cannot make you do
things against your will.
All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis in that it is self-directed and self-controlled. Hypnosis is possible only if there is cooperation between you and your hypnotist. Only you can decide to allow yourself to be hypnotized. Without your consent, it simply cannot happen.
The hypnotist does not possess any special power which forces you to submit to his or her will.The hypnotist merely guides you gently into a hypnotic state, and feeds your sub-conscious mind with carefully worded positive suggestions to help you to achieve your goals.
If you feel uncomfortable with any of these suggestions, your mind automatically rejects them and you will not act on them.
Under hypnosis, you are fully alert, in fact more alert than usual. The hypnotist can (with your permission) guide you to remember forgotten memories. However, whether you will choose to reveal them to the hypnotist is entirely up to you.
MYTH #3 – Only a person with a weak mind can be hypnotized.
This belief results from confusing "being hypnotized" with being gullible or having no will power.
It is actually the opposite that is true. Hypnosis requires intelligence and the capability to concentrate. Motivation and cooperation are also necessary for success, none of which are easily achieved by the weak-willed or weak-minded.
In fact, people of diminished mental capacity with a below average I.Q.who cannot concentrate, and people with certain serious neurological conditions cannot be hypnotized.
In general, people of above average intelligence and creativity who can concentrate well are the best candidates for hypnosis as they go into hypnosis easier and deeper than others.
After the first session most clients have a direct experiential understanding of the benefits of hypnosis. This understanding helps them, in subsequent session to enter faster and more deeply into the hypnotic state.
MYTH #4 – You may get stuck in a hypnotic state and be unable to wake up.
If you are in hypnosis and the hypnotist stopped talking, your own mind would pull you safely out of hypnosis in a couple of ways.
You would either realize the hypnotist was no longer talking to you and gradually emerge from hypnosis on your own. When you open your eyes you would be completely wide awake, refreshed and feeling fine.
The other possibility is that you would drift into a brief nap and then wake up normally, completely wide awake, feeling refreshed and alert.
In either case a client can always come out of a hypnotic state on their own.
If an emergency, such as a fire or an earthquake, occurs while you are in hypnosis, you will automatically recognize the urgency of the situation and immediately awake to full alertness.
MYTH #5 – Hypnosis is dangerous
FALSE, except for two specific cases.
A person who suffers from epileptic fits should never be hypnotized, as total relaxation may trigger an epileptic seizure. Another dangerous situation is if you are driving or operating machinery when listening to a hypnosis recording. You could lose control of the machinery when you fall into a hypnotic state, and cause damage to yourself and others.
For everyone else, hypnosis is a safe and natural process. Please note that you MUST be in a safe and secure environment before listening to a hypnosis recording.
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state and in fact, most people have definitely experienced some form of hypnosis in their daily lives. If you have ever daydreamed, you have passed in and out of a hypnotic state.
While driving, have you ever realized that you have no memory of the past several minutes and that you have now driven past your exit? This is another example of self induced hypnosis where your conscious mind was so busy in thought that you actually achieved a hypnotic state.
Your sub-conscious mind then took control of the steering wheel, brake and accelerator and so kept you safely in the correct lane. Thankfully, this self induced hypnosis, though dangerous, does not last too long and most people quickly snap out of this state.
If you have ever become so deeply involved in a book or movie that you were oblivious of your surroundings, or if you have lost track of time while listening to a charismatic and eloquent speaker, you have been in a light state of hypnosis.
You should also not mistake hypnosis for brain-washing.
Brain-washing involves prolonged periods of extreme physical stress and discomfort to the point where eventually the victim has a breakdown. A brainwashed person responds like a robot to any command and is incapable of analytical thinking.
Hypnosis, on the contrary, is achieved by helping the client to become as extremely comfortable and relaxed as possible. The objective of hypnosis is achieved with cooperation not blind obedience. The hypnotist is not your boss or master, he or she works with you to help you achieve your goals.
MYTH #6 – Hypnosis deals with the occult and is the Devil's work
The belief that hypnosis is the "Devil's work" has unfortunately been created and strengthened by prevailing urban legends
and by “B grade” Hollywood horror cult films.
Most religions have accepted the fact that hypnosis can bring about long lasting, tangible healing benefits to an individual.
The Roman Catholic Church was among the first to accept and recognize hypnosis as a healing procedure, way back in 1957. Most other major religions have also accepted hypnosis and do not prohibit their members from seeking and utilizing hypnosis.
Hypnotherapy is coded as a profession by the U.S. Department of Labor, with“hypnotherapist” listed as code number 079.157.010 in the Federal Government Titles of Legitimate Occupations.

MYTH #7 – Hypnotists have magical powers

There is nothing magical about hypnosis.
In fact, any adult who has sufficient desire and perseverance to learn can acquire the requisite skills to become a hypnotist.
A good hypnotist will not only guide you smoothly and quickly into hypnosis, but will also implant positive suggestions in your subconscious.
These suggestions will remove, weaken and replace limiting beliefs and will help you to quickly achieve your goals and objectives.
MYTH #8 – Hypnosis only works with certain people
FALSE (with a few qualifiers).
Anyone who wants to be hypnotised can be hypnotised.
Of course, this also means that if you do not want to be hypnotised you cannot be hypnotised.
No one can be hypnotized against their will.
In addition, people with diminished mental capacity or with certain neurological conditions cannot be hypnotized, because they are not able to focus and concentrate on the voice and words of the hypnotist.
It is also true that hypnosis works better with people who are more open to the benefits of hypnosis.
Any motivated person who is willing and able to focus their concentration and who co-operates with the hypnotist is the best client and will invariably reap the maximum benefits from a hypnosis session.
MYTH #9 – Hypnosis may be bad for your health
Far from being dangerous, hypnosis is very good for you, mentally and physically.
Consider what happens to you when you are in hypnosis. Your body is so deeply relaxed that you do not need to pay attention to any part. It almost feels as if you have lost all connection to your body. Your mind is now free, perhaps for the first time, to forget about the stresses and strains of daily life. All you have to do is listen as the hypnotist describes your dreams and goals for the future in such vivid detail that you actually feel and experience this future as a reality.
While you are in this state, you experience total calm and peace, and the feeling that your world is perfect.
You are in total control of your destiny and you are happy, confident and fulfilled. When you are in this relaxed state, your brain releases an abundance of endorphins into your blood stream, and these pleasure hormones get transported to every cell in your body. You feel better than you have ever felt in your life.
That is why when you end a session you feel so good you wake up smiling. All doctors, and the AMA (American Medical Association) in particular, are in agreement that relaxation has health benefits and is good for you.

MYTH #10 – During hypnosis you are asleep or unconscious
With eyes closed and body relaxed, a hypnotized person may appear to be asleep.
When that person emerges from hypnosis it might look as if they have awakened from a nap.
However this is not the case.
When you are asleep or unconscious, you are not aware of your surroundings.
During hypnosis you are not asleep or unconscious and you will be able to hear and to think at all times.
Although your body is very relaxed, your mind is actually more alert than usual, in a state of heightened awareness
and focus and you are fully aware of what is happening around you.
There is no loss of consciousness and you can control your responses and level of involvement in the process.
Each person experiences hypnosis differently.
Some people feel light, others feel heavy, some feel warm while others feel only a tingle.
However the common feeling is one of complete physical relaxation.
Generally, a person under hypnosis feels as if their body has gone to sleep but their mind is still aware, alert and awake.
MYTH #11 – You can become addicted to hypnosis, or become dependent on your hypnotist.

MYTH #12 – If you could hear the hypnotist during the session, then you were not hypnotized.
This myth originates from another common misconception that being in a state of hypnosis is the same as being asleep.
Many people feel that if they are in hypnosis, they will not be aware of anything around them, overlooking the obvious
fallacy in this belief. If you are unaware of your surroundings, you will not be able to hear the voice of the hypnotist and so would not be able to follow any instructions.
The truth about hypnosis is that you are relaxed but highly aware during hypnosis. You hear every word that is uttered.
However, after the session, you may find that you may only have a partial memory of what you heard while in hypnosis.
This amnesia is common because your mind was so focused on relaxing your body that it registered the hypnotist's words but did not store them in the conscious mind.
